Conan to Canada?!

January 23rd, 2010 · Comments

Alas, Conan’s final show has aired and what a show it was. I’m sure Freebird will be the tops of the iTunes top 10 list.

Now, I came across this article from the Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s two national newspapers (and the only one that isn’t bleeding money faster than NBC).

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/memo-to-the-cbc-hire-conan/article1435600/

That is an awesome idea but here’s just a few reasons why it might cause a problem:

Canadian performance groups like ACTRA would probably have a fit over the CBC hiring such a high profile American to front their network.

Could the CBC market the show to American broadcasters? FOX is already up in arms over their affiliates keeping FFC money from them and would fans that don’t have access to HBO really pay more to get the show?

What if the CBC’s union went on strike? That would be just crippling to the show, the viewers would go away and if any CBC strike has taught us anything, it would take a long time to re-build audiences.

Those are just some of the reasons, the Globe and Mail article also gives good reasons – many counterpoints to my points. COME TO CANADA CONAN!!

That’d be nice but wherever Coco winds up, it’s safe to say we’ll all be there watching.

See ya in September!

Soap It Up: Golden Globes Postmortem

January 18th, 2010 · Comments

Last night, Hollywood gathered for it’s most relaxed awards show the Golden Globes.

The annual show is put on by the mysterious “Hollywood Foreign Press Association”.  But, hey there’s free booze so all’s good I suppose.

To start off, the Canadian broadcaster of the show, CTV must’ve had some technical problems as they used the NBC feed for an hour before switching to a clean feed – one would know this as CTV uses some pretty horrid cover bugs.  I’m all for them, just as long as they don’t look like crap.

Some of the award winners made me a little peeved.  No Golden Globe for Jeremy Piven and Glee won best TV show?!  Like what the fuck!  On the contrary, The Hangover won in it’s category which was just awesome.  Even better, they played the song that Ed Helms sang and performed as they walked up.

Shame that Zach Galifianakis couldn’t be there, I was really hoping that he would’ve brought a bottle of jager up with him to toast the award.

And Avatar won in all it’s categories so this year, if you’re a betting person and I assume you all are – go with Avatar for everything except acting categories.  That should be your best bet for anything this year.

Moving along:

Conan is out and Jay is in and we made a bid for his old show.  I offered him tickets to John Mayer in exchange for at least the desk or the backdrop.  More on that when and if anything happens.

That’s Soap It Up!

Haiti Telethon airs next week

January 15th, 2010 · Comments

Next week, a plethora of US networks and probably some Canadian networks (rightly so) are going to be presenting a special telethon to help raise money for the relief efforts related to the Haiti earthquake.

I find the telethon concept to be a very useful one. If there’s one thing Hollywood can do right it’s raise money for any cause. One almost has to think that producer Joel Gallen, producer of America: A Tribute to Heroes and Shelter from the Storm would be in such a position again.

I think he even said “next time if we ever have to one of these” as he was talking about the carriage issues with the Shelter telethon (and I’m sure there’s a talking point for some ultra conservative blog right there – they’ve been the worst during all this).

I encourage all to donate to the cause. Oh and George Clooney is behind this one so try looking past that for all you Clooney haters out there.

Soap It Up! NBC: The New Kanye?

January 13th, 2010 · Comments

As you know, earlier today Conan O’Brien announced that he does not want to host The Tonight Show if it is pushed back to 12:05am ET.

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-says-he-wont-do-tonight-show-following-leno/

So, as expected NBC is looking like a bunch of fools. And it’s making Conan look like the better guy here. Who would want to be given a prime talk show spot, only to have it altered?

Ya know, this reminds me of Kayne West and Taylor Swift. After that incident, Taylor Swift’s career just skyrocketed while Kayne was put on the back burner.

NBC’s schedule isn’t much to write home about and from this point on, Conan O’Brien, if he get’s any offers, could do very well for himself. I think all-in-all, NBC is the new Kayne West and Conan should milk this cow for all it’s worth.

File this one under vomit inducing: ABC has ordered an all-star edition The Bachelor. Think Bachelor meets Big Brother actually, various former contestants and rejects from the past seasons of the show will live in a house and compete for cash. Hmm, no love and all for cash…sounds a lot like I Love Money.

Oh god, I really have to throw up after that one.

That’s all for this Soap It Up!
