It’s Grey Cup Fever in Calgary

November 26th, 2009 · Comments

The Canadian Football League is handing out it’s big prize this weekend, the Grey Cup in Calgary this weekend.

It’s like our Superbowl, only not nearly as big.  And with that, the amount of people in our city has grown, mostly due to an influx of Saskatchewan Roughriders fans visiting the city.

My only concern is getting a cab in the next few days.  All the big parties are set to take place starting on Thursday here and last all the way to Sunday.  They mostly take place at a few venues and hotels around town.  While I don’t see too many issues tomorrow or Friday, the weekend itself could be a problem.

I had a conversation with a driver recently and he stated that the Saskatchewan fans aren’t a real favourite of his after they broke his printer for printing credit and debit receipts.  So I know of one less cab out there for starters.  Plus my office is located in downtown near a lot of these parties.  If Stampede taught me anything, it’s that anything can happen, even in the front of your building.

One thing I have to note is that traditionally each CFL team sends out some representatives to the city to hold their own party.  Not only have all eight teams teams planned some kind of shin-dig, the Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Edmonton teams have booked out suites and convention halls, even the Atlantic Schooners have planned an event.  The Atlantic Schooners were an expansion team set to play in the late 1980’s but never got up.  Since then, a small movement has grown in Eastern Canada to get this going but has never really started.  I gotta give these fans props for throwing a party anyway, if you’re in the area, here’s a link for their party.

The Toronto Argonauts, Montreal Alouettes (the Eastern Conference champions) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats will have some smaller parties on Friday and Saturday. In recent years, this type of event has been downplayed so it’s great to see a return of it.

Go AL’s!
