The 2009 edition of the Grey Cup has come and gone through the City of Calgary and history has been written for the 97th time. Hey, not a bad opening line there, I could write for Sports Illustrated or something really big like that
Anyways, as the dust settles on the gridiron of McMahon Stadium (I’ll warn you now, I’m going to be writing like this for most of the article, football references are just really easy to do!), thousands of dejected Saskatchewan Roughriders fans are leaving disappointed, maybe a little angry like Charlie Brown feels after Lucy keeps taking away the football from under him.
The game really came down to the final play where it was ruled that Saskatchewan had too many men on the field in the last few seconds of the game, a 13th man. The Alouettes missed a field goal attempt just before the end and got to redo their last ditch effort, succeeding this time and winning the 97th Grey Cup in a city that essentially became overrun with Saskatchewan fans crossing the border for the game (and a lot of ex-pats from the province living here).
The 13th man, eh? Just a week ago, the Calgary Stampeders lost the West Final and the chance to defend their title from last year on home turf because of the 13th man. The 13th man is a reference to the fans being too overpowering for the opposing team to overcome. It’s no surprise that many fans have just joined a Facebook group called…
In less than two and a half hours after the final play, over 4,000 people have joined it. Technically, the group had a different name earlier but was changed about a half hour after the group’s creation. There aren’t a lot of discussion threads with most of it being directed in one place called “Vent Your Anger”.
The beauty of the internet, within an hour you can join a group on the internet devoted to your teams loss along with thousands of other fans in the same boat.
So far no rioting has been reported in Calgary, but to be honest Calgary could use a good old fashioned riot. Besides, it’s just a game, there’s always the next one.
