The Trouble With…on demand TV

July 20th, 2009 · Comments

Every day I hear people say that television is going to go the way of the do-do bird. It’ll all be on-demand, when you want it, through the internet…blah blah blah.

I’m not against progress, I just have one issue. I have a terrible internet/cable provider already. I’m now suppose to trust them to deliver me my content? Now, I know what you’re saying, “why not switch”…

Out of the choices in my market, my current choice is the lesser evil. Out of three shit stains, it’s the smallest one. One choice requires you to sign a contract with them, mine doesn’t. However my provider instead goes out for three hours randomly. No notice. I could be trying to write an update, read up on some shows I missed, heck, download something and boom. Out.

Another problem I have is that we’ve essentially forgone the whole “appointment viewing” that has helped to make some shows massively popular. Would Friends and M*A*S*H* have been as popular as they were if we had TiVos and easy downloading options? How will hits be made in the future?

“Hey bro, you should check out this show, you gotta download it but once you do man it’s worth the wait”…or better yet, “Hey, I tried watching my show from your web stream and it booted me off”…”your computer isn’t compatable with our streaming software, please purchase a new computer”.

Yeah, those are things I want to hear. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go and channel surf while I still can.
